RESUMEN

An efficient and sensitivity approach, which combines solid-phase extraction or ultrasonic extraction for pretreatment, followed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, has been established to simultaneously determine eight lipophilic phycotoxins and one hydrophilic phycotoxin in seawater, sediment and biota samples. The recoveries and matrix effects of target analytes were in the range of 61.6-117.3 %, 55.7-121.3 %, 57.5-139.9 % and 82.6 %-95.0 %, 85.8-106.8 %, 80.7 %-103.3 % in seawater, sediment, and biota samples, respectively. This established method revealed that seven, six and six phycotoxins were respectively detected in the Beibu Gulf, with concentrations ranging from 0.14 ng/L (okadaic acid, OA) to 26.83 ng/L (domoic acid, DA) in seawater, 0.04 ng/g (gymnodimine-A, GYM-A) to 2.75 ng/g (DA) in sediment and 0.01 ng/g (GYM-A) to 2.64 ng/g (domoic acid) in biota samples. These results suggest that the presented method is applicable for the simultaneous determination of trace marine lipophilic and hydrophilic phycotoxins in real samples.

RESUMEN

Achieving all electrical control of magnetism without assistance of an external magnetic field has been highly pursued for spintronic applications. In recent years, the manipulation of magnetic states through spin-orbit torque (SOT) has emerged as a promising avenue for realizing energy-efficient spintronic memory and logic devices. Here, we provide a review of the rapidly evolving research frontiers in all electrical control of magnetization by SOT. The first part introduces the SOT mechanisms and SOT devices with different configurations. In the second part, the developments in all electrical SOT control of magnetization enabled by spin current engineering are introduced, which include the approaches of lateral symmetry breaking, crystalline structure engineering of spin source material, antiferromagnetic order and interface-generated spin current. The third part introduces all electrical SOT switching enabled by magnetization engineering of the ferromagnet, such as the interface/interlayer exchange coupling and tuning of anisotropy or magnetization. At last, we provide a summary and future perspectives for all electrical control of magnetization by SOT.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is a major public health problem worldwide due to its high burden and poor outcomes. Despite progress in treatment, patient outcomes remain unsatisfactory, particularly in low-resource settings. The establishment of a registry is the first step towards gaining a comprehensive understanding of prevailing local conditions and identifying potential opportunities for improving patient survival. Here, we provide a narrative review of the BASeline Investigation of Out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest (BASIC-OHCA), the first national OHCA registry in China, to introduce its development history, current state, challenges and future directions. We aim to enhance cross-cultural understanding by providing insights from China, while also serving as a reference for the implementation of large-scale registries in low-resource settings.

Doxorubicin (Dox) is a potent antineoplastic agent, but its use is curtailed by severe cardiotoxicity, known as Dox-induced cardiomyopathy (DIC). The molecular mechanism underlying this cardiotoxicity remains unclear. Our current study investigates the role of Ubiquitin-Specific Protease 36 (USP36), a nucleolar deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB), in the progression of DIC and its mechanism. We found increased USP36 expression in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes and H9C2 cells exposed to Dox. Silencing USP36 significantly mitigated Dox-induced oxidative stress injury and apoptosis in vitro. Mechanistically, USP36 upregulation positively correlated with Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) expression, and its knockdown led to a reduction in PARP1 levels. Further investigation revealed that USP36 could bind to and mediate the deubiquitination of PARP1, thereby increasing its protein stability in cardiomyocytes upon Dox exposure. Moreover, overexpression of wild-type (WT) USP36 plasmid, but not its catalytically inactive mutant (C131A), stabilized PARP1 in HEK293T cells. We also established a DIC model in mice and observed significant upregulation of USP36 in the heart. Cardiac knockdown of USP36 in mice using a type 9 recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV9)-shUSP36 significantly preserved cardiac function after Dox treatment and protected against Dox-induced structural changes within the myocardium. In conclusion, these findings suggest that Dox promotes DIC progression by activating USP36-mediated PARP1 deubiquitination. This novel USP36/PARP1 axis may play a significant regulatory role in the pathogenesis of DIC.

In subtropical forest ecosystems with few phosphorus (P) inputs, P availability and forest productivity depend on soil organic P (Po) mineralization. However, the mechanisms by which the microbial community determines the status and fate of soil Po mineralization remain unclear. In the present study, soils were collected from three typical forest types: secondary natural forest (SNF), mixed planting, and monoculture forest of Chinese fir. The P fractions, Po-mineralization ability, and microbial community in the soils of different forest types were characterized. In addition, we defined Po-mineralizing taxa with the potential to interact with the soil microbial community to regulate Po mineralization. We found that a higher labile P content persisted in SNF and was positively associated with the Po-mineralization capacity of the soil microbial community. In vitro cultures of soil suspensions revealed that soil Po mineralization of three forest types was distinguished by differences in the composition of fungal communities. We further identified broad phylogenetic lineages of Po-mineralizing fungi with a high intensity of positive interactions with the soil microbial community, implying that the facilitation of Po-mineralizing taxa is crucial for soil P availability. Our dilution experiments to weaken microbial interactions revealed that in SNF soil, which had the highest interaction intensity of Po-mineralizing taxa with the community, Po-mineralization capacity was irreversibly lost after dilution, highlighting the importance of microbial diversity protection in forest soils. In summary, this study demonstrates that the interactions of Po-mineralizing microorganisms with the soil microbial community are critical for P availability in subtropical forests.IMPORTANCEIn subtropical forest ecosystems with few phosphorus inputs, phosphorus availability and forest productivity depend on soil organic phosphorus mineralization. However, the mechanisms by which the microbial community interactions determine the mineralization of soil organic phosphorus remain unclear. In the present study, soils were collected from three typical forest types: secondary natural forest, mixed planting, and monoculture forest of Chinese fir. We found that a higher soil labile phosphorus content was positively associated with the organic phosphorus mineralization capacity of the soil microbial community. Soil organic phosphorus mineralization of three forest types was distinguished by the differences in the composition of fungal communities. The positive interactions between organic phosphorus-mineralizing fungi and the rest of the soil microbial community facilitated organic phosphorus mineralization. This study highlights the importance of microbial diversity protection in forest soils and reveals the microbial mechanism of phosphorus availability maintenance in subtropical forest ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a major complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Type-2 DM (T2DM) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality, while serum biomarkers may facilitate the prediction of these outcomes. Early differential diagnosis of T2DM complicated with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) plays an important role in controlling disease progression and improving safety. AIM: To investigate the correlation of serum bilirubin and γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (γ-GGT) with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in T2DM patients with ACS. METHODS: The clinical data of inpatients from January 2022 to December 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. According to different conditions, they were divided into the T2DM complicated with ACS group (T2DM + ACS, n = 96), simple T2DM group (T2DM, n = 85), and simple ACS group (ACS, n = 90). The clinical data and laboratory indices were compared among the three groups, and the correlations of serum total bilirubin (TBIL) levels and serum γ-GGT levels with other indices were discussed. T2DM + ACS patients received a 90-day follow-up after discharge and were divided into event (n = 15) and nonevent (n = 81) groups according to the occurrence of MACEs; Univariate and multivariate analyses were further used to screen the independent influencing factors of MACEs in patients. RESULTS: The T2DM + ACS group showed higher γ-GGT, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and lower TBIL and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels than the T2DM and ACS groups (P < 0.05). Based on univariate analysis, the event and nonevent groups were significantly different in age (t = 3.3612, P = 0.0011), TBIL level (t = 3.0742, P = 0.0028), γ-GGT level (t = 2.6887, P = 0.0085), LDL-C level (t = 2.0816, P = 0.0401), HbA1c level (t = 2.7862, P = 0.0065) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LEVF) levels (t=3.2047, P = 0.0018). Multivariate logistic regression analysis further identified that TBIL level and LEVF level were protective factor for MACEs, and age and γ-GGT level were risk factors (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Serum TBIL levels are decreased and γ-GGT levels are increased in T2DM + ACS patients, and the two indices are significantly negatively correlated. TBIL and γ-GGT are independent influencing factors for MACEs in such patients.

ABSTRACT: Aims: Targeted temperature management is recommended for at least 24 h in comatose survivors of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) after the return of spontaneous circulation; however, whether an extension for 72 h leads to better neurological outcomes is uncertain. Methods: We included data from the Qilu Hospital of Shandong University between July 20, 2019, and June 30, 2022. Unconscious patients who had return of spontaneous circulation lasting >20 consecutive min and received endovascular cooling (72 h) or normothermia treatment were compared in terms of survival-to-discharge and favorable neurological survival. Propensity score matching was used to formulate balanced 1:3 matched patients. Results: In total, 2,084 patients were included. Sixteen patients received extended endovascular cooling and 48 matched controls received normothermia therapy. Compared with the normothermia group, patients who received prolonged endovascular cooling had a higher survival-to-discharge rate. However, good neurological outcomes did not differ significantly. Before matching, Cox regression analysis, using mortality as the event, showed that extended endovascular cooling independently affected the survival of IHCA patients. Conclusions: Among comatose patients who had been resuscitated from IHCA, the use of endovascular cooling for 72 h might confer a benefit on survival-to-discharge.

As a synthetic androgen, 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) is widely used in aquaculture to induce sex reversal and may pose a potential risk to aquatic organisms. This ecological risk has attracted the attention of many scholars, but it is not comprehensive enough. Thus, the adverse effects of MT on zebrafish (Danio rerio) were comprehensively evaluated from gonadal histology, as well as the mRNA expression levels of 47 genes related to hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, germ cell differentiation, sex determination, and hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. Adult zebrafish with a female/male ratio of 5:7 were exposed to a solvent control (0.001% dimethyl sulfoxide) and three measured concentrations of MT (5, 51 and 583 ng/L) for 50 days. The results showed that MT had no significant histological effects on the ovaries of females, but the frequency of late-mature oocytes (LMO) showed a downward trend, indicating that MT could induce ovarian suppression to a certain extent. The transcriptional expression of activating transcription factor 4b1 (atf4b1), activating transcription factor 4b2 (atf4b2), calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II delta 1 (camk2d1), calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II delta 2 (camk2d2) and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II inhibitor 2 (camk2n2) genes in the brain of females increased significantly at all treatment groups of MT, and the mRNA expression of forkhead box L2a (foxl2) and ovarian cytochrome P450 aromatase (cyp19a1a) genes in the ovaries were down-regulated by 5 and 583 ng/L group, which would translate into inhibition of oocyte development. As compared to females, MT had relatively little effects on the reproductive system of males, and only the transcriptional alterations of synaptonemal complex protein 3 (sycp3) and 17-alpha-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase (cyp17) genes were observed in the testes, not enough to affect testicular histology. In addition, MT at all treatments strongly increased corticotropin-releasing hormone (crh) transcript in the brain of females, as well as deiodinase 2 (dio2) transcript in the brain of males. The paired box protein 8 (pax8) gene was significantly decreased at 51 or 583 ng/L of MT in both female and male brains. The above results suggest that MT can pose potential adverse effects on the reproductive and thyroid endocrine system of fish.

Ventilation is an important part of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The advanced airway mode and 30:2 mode are used for intubated and non-intubated patients, respectively. It is debatable that passive produced by 30 compressions can provide adequate tidal volume for 30:2 mode. In addition, the fragmented ventilation caused by continuous compression may result in ineffective ventilation. In the study, one pig was anaesthetized and intubated for 2 CPRs. Continuous chest compressions with ventilation and continuous chest compressions without mechanical ventilation were performed in 2 CPRs, respectively. Three 10-minute data segments including a period of normal ventilation (V segment), a period of only compressions without ventilation (C segment), and a period of compressions with ventilation (C-V segment) were used to analyze peek flow (PF), peek pressure (PP) and tidal volume. All the data was presented as mean ± standard deviation. Chest compression resulted in 14.90% increase in mean PP (2401.40 ± 94.75 Pa vs 2822.06 ± 291.10 Pa, p<0.05), 81.46% increase in average PF (319.58 ± 56.93 ml/s vs 579.92 ± 80.27 ml/s, p<0.05). The mean tidal volumes for C segment, V segment and C-V segment were 189.13 ml, 514.72 ml, and 429.26ml, respectively. Continuous compressions reduced the accumulative tidal volume, but when five compressions were made in one inspiratory phase, there is almost no loss of tidal volume (510.86 ± 47.24 ml vs 514.72 ± 29.25 ml, p<0.05). The study suggested the ventilator without feedback regulation might reduce the peek pressure during CPR and 5 compressions in 2 s inspiratory phase provided higher tidal volume.Clinical Relevance- This study shows that 150 chest compressions per minute provided greater tidal volume than 100 and 120 compressions per minute; continuous chest compressions could also provide a certain amount of oxygen supply.

Few studies have assessed sex differences in the management of suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We aimed to compare the evaluation, treatment, and outcomes between males and females with suspected ACS in the emergency department. Data were obtained from a prospective registry of acute chest pain involving 21 emergency departments in Shandong Province, China. The primary endpoint was 30-day major adverse cardiac events (MACEs). Overlap propensity score weighting was used to address potential confounding. A total of 8046 patients were analysed (42.8% female). Overlap-weighted analysis showed no significant association of female sex with 30-day MACEs (odds ratio, 0.91; 95% CI 0.75 to 1.11; P = 0.363). Secondary analyses found that women were less likely to be identified as high risk at first presentation (odds ratio, 0.86; 95% CI 0.78 to 0.94; P < 0.001). In the emergency department, women were less likely to undergo antiplatelet therapy (odds ratio, 0.87; 95% CI 0.79 to 0.96; P = 0.004) or coronary angiography (odds ratio, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.69 to 0.88; P < 0.001). Women had a longer length of stay in the emergency department and were less likely to be admitted to a ward at disposition. These sex differences existed only in the non-ST-elevation subgroup and were independent of risk stratification. Women with non-ST-elevation chest pain in China received suboptimal treatment in the emergency department. However, their clinical outcomes were not significantly different from those of men. Further studies are needed to determine the causes and impacts of these sex differences.

The involvement of endothelial barrier function in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and its upstream regulators remains unknown. Single-cell RNA sequencing shows that disrupted endothelial focal junction is an early (3 days) and persistent (28 days) event during Angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced AAA progression. Consistently, mRNA sequencing on human aortic dissection tissues confirmed downregulated expression of endothelial barrier-related genes. Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), a negative regulator of AAA, is found to be upregulated in the intimal media of AAA samples, leading to testing its role in early-stage AAA. ALDH2 knockdown/knockout specifically in endothelial cells (ECs) significantly increases expression of EC barrier markers related to focal adhesion and tight junction, restores endothelial barrier integrity, and suppresses early aortic dilation of AAA (7 and 14 days post-Ang II). Mechanically, ELK3 acts as an ALDH2 downstream regulator for endothelial barrier function preservation. At the molecular level, ALDH2 directly binds to LIN28B, a regulator of ELK3 mRNA stability, hindering LIN28B binding to ELK3 mRNA, thereby depressing ELK3 expression and impairing endothelial barrier function. Therefore, preserving vascular endothelial barrier integrity via ALDH2-specific knockdown in ECs holds therapeutic potential in the early management of AAAs.

For a waveguide display device, the field of view (FOV) is a key parameter for evaluating its optical performance. To address this issue, we propose a hybrid waveguide system, which is composed of two projectors, two in-couplers, two half-mirror arrays and an out-coupler. We use two projectors to generate the left and right parts of the output image separately, which can increase the upper limit of the FOV significantly. Unlike conventional waveguide-based system, we use half-mirror arrays instead of folding gratings to realize 2D exit pupil expansion. By doing so, the total internal reflection condition can always be met during the pupil expansion process. To solve the difficulty in designing collimating optical system with large FOV, we propose a method of tilting the projection system. The hybrid waveguide system can realize a FOV of 88°(H) × 53°(V).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cardiac arrest (CA) remains a significant cause of death and disability. High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can improve the survival rate of CA. A challenging issue is to find physiological indicators for screening and evaluating the cardiovascular function associated with CPR. This study aimed to investigate the electrical-mechanical dynamic coupling between electrocardiographic (ECG) and photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals for indicating cardiovascular function in the progress of CPR. METHOD: The ECG and PPG signals were simultaneously collected from a porcine CA model (n = 10) induced by ventricular fibrillation, and were further divided into four periods: Baseline, CA, CPR, and recovery of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Recurrence quantitative analysis (RQA) was applied to examine the nonlinear dynamics of the ECG and PPG signals individually, and cross recurrence quantitative analysis (CRQA) was used to examine the ECG-PPG dynamical coupling. RESULTS: The CA influenced the dynamic patterns of electrical and mechanical activities and the electrical-mechanical coupling, which can be observed from the reduced entropy (ENTR) (p < 0.01), reduced determinism (DET) (p < 0.01) and reduced trapping time (TT) (p < 0.01) at CA compared to Baseline. The recurrence rate (RR), ENTR, DET, and TT at CPR were significantly lower than the parameters at ROSC but higher than those at CA. CONCLUSIONS: The electrical-mechanical dynamical coupling was sensitive to CPR and able to reflect the changes in cardiac function in the process of CPR.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is an important global public health issue, but its epidemiology and outcomes in low-income and middle-income countries remain largely unknown. We aim to comprehensively describe the incidence, process of care, and outcomes of OHCA in China. METHODS: In the prospective, multicentre, population-based Baseline Investigation of Out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest (BASIC-OHCA) registry study, participating sites were selected from both urban and rural areas in all seven geographical regions across China. All patients with OHCA assessed by emergency medical service (EMS) staff were consecutively enrolled from Aug 1, 2019, to Dec 31, 2020. Patients with suspected cardiac arrest assessed by bystanders whose return of spontaneous circulation was achieved without the need for defibrillation or EMS personnel cardiopulmonary resuscitation were excluded. Patients with all key variables missing were excluded, including resuscitation attempt, age, sex, witnessed status, cause, all process of care indicators, and all outcome measures. In this analysis, we included data for EMS agencies serving 25 monitoring sites (20 urban and five rural) that included the entire serving population, data for the whole of 2020, and at least 50 OHCA patients in 2020. Data were collected and reported using the Utstein template. We calculated the crude incidence of EMS-assessed OHCA in 2020. We also report data on baseline characteristics (including sex, cause, location of OHCA, and presence of shockable rhythm), process of care (including EMS response time, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, and advanced life support), and outcomes of non-traumatic OHCA between Aug 1, 2019, and Dec 31, 2020, including survival and survival with favourable neurological outcomes at discharge or 30 days, and at 6 and 12 months. FINDINGS: Of 115·1 million people served by the 25 participating sites, 132 262 EMS-assessed patients with OHCA were enrolled, and resuscitation was attempted for 42 054 (31·8%) patients between Aug 1, 2019, and Dec 31, 2020. The crude incidence of EMS-assessed OHCA was 95·7 per 100 000 population (95% CI 95·6-95·8) in 2020. Among 38 227 individuals with non-traumatic OHCA, 25 958 (67·9%) were male, 30 282 (79·2%) had a cardiac arrest at home, 32 523 (85·1%) had a presumed cardiac cause, and 2297 (6·0%) presented with an initial shockable rhythm. 4049 (11·5%) of 35 090 patients with an unwitnessed or bystander-witnessed OHCA received dispatcher-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation and 7121 (20·3%) received bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation; only 14 (<0·1%) patients were assessed by bystanders with an automated external defibrillator. The median EMS response time was 12 min (IQR 9-16). At hospital discharge or 30 days, 441 (1·2%) of 38 227 survived, 304 (0·8%) survived up to 6 months, and 269 (0·7%) up to 12 months. At hospital discharge or 30 days, 309 (0·8%) survived with favourable neurological outcomes, 257 (0·7%) had favourable neurological outcomes at 6 months, and 236 (0·6%) at 12 months. INTERPRETATION: Our findings revealed a high burden of EMS-assessed OHCA with a low proportion of resuscitation attempts. The suboptimal implementation of chain of survival and unsatisfactory prognosis call for national efforts to improve the care and outcomes of patients with OHCA in China. Major natural disasters seriously threaten human life and health. After earthquakes and other catastrophes, survivors are often trapped in the confined spaces caused by the collapse of ground and buildings, with relative separation from the outside world, restricted access, complex environment, and oncoming or ongoing unsafety, leading to the rescue extremely difficult. In order to save lives and improve the outcome more efficiently in the confined spaces after natural disasters, it is very important to standardize and reasonably apply the trauma assessment and first aid workflow. This study focuses on trauma assessment and first aid. From the aspects of trauma assessment, vital signs stabilization, hemostasis and bandaging, post-trauma anti-infection, and the transportation of patients, a trauma first aid work process suitable for a small space of a major natural disaster is formed, It is helpful to realize the immediate and efficient treatment of trauma in the confined spaces after natural catastrophes, to reduce the rate of death and disability and improve the outcome of patients.

Background: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a time-critical and fatal medical emergency that has been linked to non-optimal temperatures. However, the future burden of OHCA due to non-optimal temperatures, heatwaves, and cold spells under climate change has not been well evaluated. Methods: We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study in 15 Northern Chinese cities throughout 2020 to estimate the exposure-response relationships of non-optimal temperatures, heatwaves, and cold spells with hourly OHCA onset in hot and cold seasons. We obtained future daily average temperatures by using 20 general circulation models under two greenhouse gas emission scenarios: one with certain emission control and the other with relaxed control. Lastly, we projected the change of OHCA burden under these two climate scenarios. Findings: We analyzed a total of 29,671 OHCA patients and found that high temperatures and heatwaves as well as low temperatures and cold spells were all significantly associated with an increased risk of OHCA onset. Under the scenario of uncontrolled emissions, the attributable fraction (AF) of OHCA due to high temperatures and heatwaves would increase by 4.94% and 6.99% from the 2010s to 2090s, respectively. The AF due to low temperatures would decrease by 1.27% by the 2090s and the effects of cold spells were projected to be marginal after the 2050s. Under a medium emission control scenario, the upward trend of heat-related OHCA burden would become flat, and the decline in cold-related OHCA burden would also slow down. Interpretation: Our study provides evidence of significant morbidity risk and burden of OHCA associated with global warming across Northern China. Our findings indicate that the increase in OHCA burden attributable to heat could not be offset by the decrements attributable to cold, emphasizing the importance of mitigation policies for limiting global warming and reducing the associated risks of OHCA onset. Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a global public health concern. Nationwide studies on the effects of short-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) on OHCA risk are rare in regions with high PM levels, and evidence for coarse PM (PM2.5-10) is limited and inconsistent. To evaluate the associations between fine PM (PM2.5) and PM2.5-10 and OHCA onset, a time-stratified case-crossover study was conducted on 77,261 patients with cardiac OHCA in 26 cities across China in 2020. Daily PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 concentrations were assessed with high-resolution and full-coverage PM estimations. Conditional logistic regression models were applied in analyses. Each interquartile range of PM increase in 3-day moving average was associated with an increased risk of cardiac OHCA onset of 2.37% (95% CI, 1.20-3.56%) for PM2.5 and 2.12% (95% CI, 0.70-3.56%) for PM2.5-10. Stratified analyses showed higher susceptibility in patients over 75 years for PM2.5 exposure and with diabetes for PM2.5-10. This first nationwide study in region with high PM levels and great PM variability found not only PM2.5 but also PM2.5-10 were associated with a higher risk of OHCA onset, which could add powerful epidemiological evidence to this field and provide new evidence for the formulation of air quality guidelines.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have received great attention due to their persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity. Various activated carbons (ACs) exhibit wide variability in adsorptive performance towards PFASs. In order to gain a systematic understanding of adsorptive removal of legacy and emerging PFASs by ACs, the adsorption of ten PFASs on various ACs was comprehensively investigated. Results showed that granular activated carbon-1 (GAC-1) and powdered activated carbon-1 (PAC-1) removed more than 90% of all target PFASs. Particle size, surface charge, and micropores quantity of ACs were closely related to their performance for PFASs removal. Electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interaction, surface complexation and hydrogen bonding were the adsorption mechanisms, with hydrophobic interaction being the predominant adsorptive force. Physical and chemical adsorption were both involved in PFAS adsorption. The removal rates of PFASs by GAC-1 decreased from 93%-100% to 15%-66% in the presence of 5 mg/L fulvic acid (FA). GAC was able to remove more PFASs under acidic medium, whereas PAC removed hydrophobic PFASs better under the neutral medium. The removal rates of PFASs by GAC-3 increased significantly from 0%-21% to 52%-97% after being impregnated with benzalkonium chlorides (BACs), demonstrating the superiority of this modification method. Overall, this study provided theoretical support for removing PFASs from water phase with ACs.

A significant increase in reactive nitrogen (N) added to terrestrial ecosystems through agricultural fertilization or atmospheric deposition is considered to be one of the most widespread drivers of global change. Modifying biomass allocation is one primary strategy for maximizing plant growth rate, survival, and adaptability to various biotic and abiotic stresses. However, there is much uncertainty as to whether and how plant biomass allocation strategies change in response to increased N inputs in terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we synthesized 3516 paired observations of plant biomass and their components related to N additions across terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. Our meta-analysis reveals that N addition (ranging from 1.08 to 113.81 g m-2 year-1 ) increased terrestrial plant biomass by 55.6% on average. N addition has increased plant stem mass fraction, shoot mass fraction, and leaf mass fraction by 13.8%, 12.9%, and 13.4%, respectively, but with an associated decrease in plant reproductive mass (including flower and fruit biomass) fraction by 3.4%. We further documented a reduction in plant root-shoot ratio and root mass fraction by 27% (21.8%-32.1%) and 14.7% (11.6%-17.8%), respectively, in response to N addition. Meta-regression results showed that N addition effects on plant biomass were positively correlated with mean annual temperature, soil available phosphorus, soil total potassium, specific leaf area, and leaf area per plant. Nevertheless, they were negatively correlated with soil total N, leaf carbon/N ratio, leaf carbon and N content per leaf area, as well as the amount and duration of N addition. In summary, our meta-analysis suggests that N addition may alter terrestrial plant biomass allocation strategies, leading to more biomass being allocated to aboveground organs than belowground organs and growth versus reproductive trade-offs. At the global scale, leaf functional traits may dictate how plant species change their biomass allocation pattern in response to N addition.
